About the frontal branches of callosomarginal artery
The callosomarginal artery is one of the two main continuations of the anterior cerebral artery on the medial face of the hemisphere. It runs backwards in or near the cingulate sulcus, above and parallel to the pericallosal artery on the corpus callosum. Its frontal branches leave its upper side in turn, from front to back, and are named the anteromedial, intermediomedial and posteromedial frontal branches.
Each branch climbs across the medial surface of the superior frontal gyrus, and the larger ones curl over the upper margin of the hemisphere to supply a strip of the lateral surface next to the midline. The anteromedial branch serves the front of the medial frontal cortex, the intermediomedial branch its middle part, and the posteromedial branch the region just in front of the paracentral lobule, including the supplementary motor area. When the callosomarginal artery is absent, as happens in a fair number of brains, the same branches come directly from the pericallosal artery.
Their territory holds cortex that plans movement, starts behaviour and, at its back end, controls the leg. Blockage of these branches can therefore cause weakness of the opposite leg, reduced spontaneous movement and speech, and lack of drive. Distal aneurysms of the anterior cerebral artery tend to sit at the junction where the callosomarginal artery leaves the pericallosal artery, close to the origin of these branches.
Course and supply
- Arises from
- Upper side of the callosomarginal artery along the cingulate sulcus (from the pericallosal artery when the callosomarginal is absent).
- Ends in
- End in cortical branches over the medial superior frontal gyrus, curling over the superior margin onto the lateral surface.
- Supplies
- Supply the medial surface of the frontal lobe and a strip of cortex along the upper margin of its lateral surface.
