Why we built it

Anatomy is learned by looking, again and again, from every side. Time in the dissection room is short and shared, printed atlases show only the views someone chose to draw, and the best 3D anatomy software is often priced for institutions, installed on one machine, or both.

Anthromica puts the complete human body in any browser, on a laptop or a tablet, for the evening before the exam and the one after that. Every student can open the same body at once, a cut can be undone, a section can be slid through the trunk and back, and a teacher can save the exact view for next year.

Where the anatomy comes from

The body is Z-Anatomy, an open 3D atlas of human anatomy, which is built on BodyParts3D, the anatomy database of Japan's Database Center for Life Science. Its author repaired the models and named every structure to the Terminologia Anatomica (2019), the international standard, and we take those structures and names as they are. The text in the reading pane comes from the encyclopaedia articles Z-Anatomy carries for each structure.

It is one adult male body, so it shows one individual rather than every variation.

What we will not claim

A screen does not teach the feel of tissue under a blade or the weight of a limb, and we do not pretend it does. Clinical skills are learned on patients, under supervision. What a model can do is make sure the student who arrives there already knows what is where.

Whether Anthromica replaces any part of a course is a decision for that faculty; we suggest using it beside dissection and prosection.

What we hold to

The body is the subject.
The interface serves the model and gets out of its way.
Named the way the exam names it.
The Latin term from the Terminologia Anatomica beside the English, for every structure.
Readable at arm's length.
Anything on the screen has to make sense to someone in their first anatomy course.
Within reach.
A browser and a modest subscription, not an installer, a licence for one machine and a price set for institutions.

Who makes it

Anthromica is made by a small independent team. If you find a name or a structure you think is wrong, write to support@anthromica.com.
